The Stair Step 1202

No, not the model number but literally the number of steps we climbed to the top of the 200 meter tall Lion's Rock, a 5th c. fortress/palace carved out of the face and top of the rock. I'm not going to kid you, it was a tough climb for me, even with my terrific Merrill hiking shoes. I was amazed by the number of Sri Lankans who walked barefoot! You can appreciate the scale of the lion's paws by the photo, although the lion's face has deteriorated over time. Another Unesco World Heritage site, the fortress took 6 years to complete and was the capital of Sri Lanka for 12 years. It is considered to be one of the oldest known tourist attractions in the world.
